Bottom radical is 'thread' (糸). The top radical once acted phonetically to express 'white': this character meant 'white silk cloth', i.e., not patterned. From this notion of 'undeveloped/pristine' came meanings such as 'bare', 'base', 'elemental', and so forth. Henshall suggests taking the top radical as a variant of 'life/raw' (生), and as a mnemonic: 'Raw threads are bare and basic elements.'
