The "Tragedies and Statistics" story which has been kicking my butt for the last (groan) month, is done, at 8400 words. Ack. This is the longest self-contained story I've written since that un-saleable 10K Lovecraft pastiche from around 1995. I don't think it's as good as I want it to be, or as bad as I fear it is. It needs edits and continuity checking, but I also need to put it away for a time and go do something else. The story is serious, fairly realistic stuff (as much as 'realistic' can apply to a story set in a galaxy-wide empire thousands of years in the future). I need to write some wacked-out fantasy to untwist my brain from this particular story's issues.

meaning: tax, tithe

税金 == zeikin == tax
所得税 == shotokuzei == income tax

Left radical is 'rice plant'. Right radical is 'exchange', acting phonetically to express 'divide'. Thus, 'a division of rice', an apparent reference to the portion of property given up as tax or tithe. Henshall suggests taking the right radical as 'elder brother' (兄), and 'away' (八), and as a mnemonic: 'Elder brother gives away rice-tax.'
