Thanks to everyone for their congratulations on my Clarion acceptance. I woke up yesterday terrified. OMG, what have I gotten myself into?!?

But now I feel fine. I think it was a hypnagogic phenomenon, like waking up and seeing a glowing-eyed demon on the end of your bed, or an old woman strangling you.

That has happened to you, hasn't it? *checks for Nixon in his Anxiety Closet*

Another pillar of my belief system falls: coin flipping is not random.

Anyone remember a Fritz Lieber story, "Gonna Roll the Bones"? Central character was a guy who could roll dice and make them come up the way he wanted. Great story. Won both the Hugo and Nebula for novelette.

BTW, I love love love Signal + Noise's tagline: "All Models Are False, Some Are Useful." Believe it. Live it.

JUN

meaning: level, conform, quasi-

水準 == suijun == standard, water level
低水準 == tesuijun == substandard

Left radical is 'water'. Right radical is a character found only in Chinese, meaning 'hawk on a branch', used phonetically to express 'level'. The upper part of this radical is 'bird'. Henshall suggests taking the bottom radical as 'ten' (十), and as a mnemonic: 'Ten birds on water, all at same level.'
