KOU
atsu(i)
meaning: thick, kind

分厚な == buatsu na == bulky, heavy, thick
厚情 == koujou == courtesy

Left radical is 'cliff'. The inner radical was originally a pictograph of a watchtower, similar to the pictograph that gave rise to the current character for 'high/tall' (高). This character originally meant 'tall cliff'. Henshall suggests taking the top part of the inner radical as 'day' (日), the bottom part as 'child' (子), and as a mnemonic: 'Kind but 'thick' child plays daily by cliff.'
