扁額 == hengaku == framed picture or motto


Left radical is 'visitor' (客), acting phonetically to express 'shave'. Right radical is 'head'. This character originally referred to shaving the hairline back to create a larger forehead, which in ancient China was considered desirable. (Wish I had that problem...) How it came to its other present meanings is unclear. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic: 'Visitor's forehead looks like plaque.'
