KAKU, KOU

meaning: standard, status, case (grammatical)

体格 == taikaku == physique, constitution (in sense of physical health)
格好いい == kakkouii == cool, good-looking, hot, fancy, bitchin', you get the idea.


Left radical is 'tree' (木), right radical is 'each' (各), the latter acting phonetically to express 'tall'. This character originally meant 'tall tree', which gave rise to meanings such as 'reach a height' and 'achieve a status', 'set a standard'. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic: 'Each tree sets a standard.'
