meaning: endeavor, try

努めて == tsutomete == to the best of one's ability
努力 == doryoku == great effort

Top radical is 'slave' (奴), bottom radical is 'strength/effort' (力). Henshall suggests as a mnemonic: 'Try with slave-like effort.'

This is apparently a rarely used kanji today. JWPce's dictionary lists only four compounds.
