TAN

meaning: simple, single, unit
単純 な == tanjun na == simple
単独 == tandoku == solo

Originally a pictograph of a thrusting weapon (mmm, halberds...), which was borrowed phonetically to express 'simple'. Henshall suggests a variant of 'field' (田) and 'ten' (十), and as a mnemonic: 'Simple unit of ten fields.'
