Bottom radical is the radical form of 'fire'. The upper radical is composed of 'meat' (肉) and 'dog' (犬). This character originally referred to roasted dog meat, and still can mean 'roast' or 'burn' in Chinese. Its current meanings in Japanese are borrowed for phonetic reasons. Henshall suggests a mnemonic: 'Duly eat roasted dog meat, but...'
