era(bu), yo(ru)
meaning: choose
当選 == tousen == election
選び出す == erabidasu == pick out

Left/lower radical is 'movement along a road'. The inner radical is a character only found in Chinese, originally a pictograph of 'twisting threads', acting phonetically to express 'follow'. How this character came to mean 'choose' is controversial. Henshall suggests a mnemonic: 'Choose to move together like twisting threads.'
