I dunno, two halberds sounds pretty deep to me.

SEN
asa(i)
meaning: shallow, light
浅瀬 == asase == ford, shallows, shoal, sandbar
浅黒い == asaguroi == dark-skinned, swarthy

Left radical is the radical form of 'water'. Right radical is 'halberd' doubled, acting phonetically to express 'small'. Thus, 'small amount of water', or shallows. Henshall suggests a mnemonic: 'Water shallow: depth of two halberds.'
