SHU
tane
meaning: seed, kind
人種 == jinshu == humankind
一種 == isshu == species, kind, variety

Left radical is 'rice plant', right radical is 'heavy' (重), acting phonetically to express 'slow'. This character originally referred to a specific type of late ripening rice; now refers to 'types' in general. The 'seed' meaning may be the result of a misinterpretation. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic: 'Kind of rice plant heavy with seed..'
