SHI

meaning: history, chronicler
歴史 == rekishi == history
史学者 == shigakusha == historian

Origin somewhat unclear. Apparently this character was originally a pictograph of a hand holding a counting stick. Henshall suggests taking it as a variant of 'middle/center' (中), and as a mnemonic: 'Hand of man central to history.'
