Originally a pictograph of a ladle with a cutting edge. Apparently became associated with 'clan/family' because of a confusion with another character meaning 'hilltop', indicating the hilltop fortress of a feudal clan. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic: 'Mr. Hill borrows family ladle.'
