Originally a pictograph of an erect male organ. The cross stroke may represent the glans. This character originally meant simply 'man'; the meaning of 'warrior' may because fighting men represented the ultimate in masculinity. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic: 'Samurai stands erect.'
