'Etymologically indelicate' according to Henshall. This character originally showed a hand wiping the buttocks (upper left radical) with a cloth (center/bottom radical). Eventually, this character came to mean 'rubbing' in a broader sense, and became associated with the act of rubbing as a part of the printing process. 'Hand' was eventually replaced with the radical form of 'sword/cut' (刀). Henshall suggests as a mnemonic: 'Buttock cloth has finely cut print.'
