Off to ShoujoCon! Back Sunday.

KOU

meaning: peace, health
小康 == shoukou == respite
不健康 == fukenkou == ill health

Originally a pictograph of two hands holding a pestle pounding rice, with an indication of bran being produced. This character originally meant 'rice bran'. Its current meanings are borrowings. Henshall suggests remembering the central radical as a hand holding a pestle, the upper/left radical as 'building', and as a mnemonic:  'Hand pounds healthy rice bran in building.'
