meaning: hard, firm, solid
固体 == kotai == solid state
凝固点 == gyoukoten == freezing point

Outer radical is 'enclosure'. Inner radical is 'old' (古), acting phonetically to express 'solid', and perhaps lending a meaning of 'long in place'. This character originally referred to solid walls surrounding a castle. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic: 'Solid old enclosure.'
