KYOKU, GOKU
kiwa(meru)
meaning: extreme, pole
北極 == hokkyoku == North Pole
極悪 == gakuaku == heinous

Left radical is 'wood' (木). The right radical is a character only found in Chinese meaning to 'urgency'. Its origin is unclear, but it seems originally to have been a pictograph of a hand pushing a person into an opening. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic: 'Person pushed into opening between wooden poles.'
