Ouch

No, I haven't fallen into a hole lately. I've been working on a short story, and it's been a painful process. I've been stretching myself, as they say, and trying a lot of new things. First person POV with a strong, opinionated, somewhat emotional and chatty narrative voice; real historical setting using real historical characters; lack of strong plot, and reliance on idea, character, setting and prose style to carry the reader along.

I've finally finished, and the story was longer than I wanted. I was aiming for 3K or less, and the story came out about 5K. Hrmph. I don't seem to be able to write a story less than 5K. It has some nice parts, but all in all, it's just not as good as I had hoped. Oh, well. It should be up on OWW in the next day or two, and we'll see what the critters have to say.

But damn. I think it was the most painful thing I've written.

I've fallen woefully behind on my returned crits this month. Now I must catch up.

KYUU
suku(u)
meaning: rescue, redeem
救命ブイ == kyuumeibui == lifebuoy
救い == sukui == help, aid, relief

Left radical is 'seek/request' (求), right is 'threaten/coerce' (hand holding a stick). This character originally meant 'demand', i.e., to make a request by threat. Unclear how it came to mean 'rescue'. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic:  'Rescue by coercive request.'
