In which the Clockwork Goddess of Mercy bonks me on the head with her mechanical wand

My short story, 'The Girl of Flesh', has been purchased by The Fortean Bureau, a webzine of speculative fiction. It will probably appear in their November issue.

meaning: goods, money
硬貨 == kouka == currency, coin
雑貨 == zakka == sundry goods

Top radical is 'change/enchant' (化), bottom is 'shell/money' (貝). Thus, 'that which is exchangeable with money', i.e., goods. Later came to mean just 'money' as well. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic:  'Change goods for money and vice-versa.'
