  • Mood:

OKU

meaning: hundred million
十億 == juuoku == billion
億万長者 == okumanchouja == billionaire

Left radical is 'person', (人), right radical is 'thought' (意), in its original meaning of 'heart filled with thoughts and feelings'. This character originally meant a person brimming over with thoughts and feelings, then 'brimming over' in general, which save rise to meanings of 'large number'. In Chinese it means a hundred thousand, but in Japanese a hundred million. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic:  'Person with a hundred million thoughts.'
