omote, omo, tsura
meaning: face, aspect, mask
外面 == gaimen == exterior
仮面 == kamen == mask

The three part structure in the center was originally a pictograph meaning 'face', enclosed by a border, e.g., a mask that enclosed the face. Henshall suggests remembering it by association with 'eye' (目), and as a mnemonic:  'Mask encloses funny face with big eye.'
