HAN, BAN
ita
meaning: board, plate
黒板 == kokuban == blackboard
板前 == itamae == chef

Left radical is  'tree' (木), right radical is 'oppose' (反), the latter used phonetically to express 'thin'. (Yes, I know Henshall said that the same radical in yesterday's kanji phonetically expressed 'slanting'. I just work here.) Thus, 'thin wood', or 'board'. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic:  'Opposed to wooden boards.'
