SHOU

meaning: trade, deal, sell, Shang China
商業 == shougyou == commerce
商人 == shounin == merchant

Origin obscure. Left radical is 'sun' (日), right radical is 'summon' (召), here acting phonetically to express 'clear'. Henshall suggests taking the top radical as a variant of 'stand' (立), a 'counter', 'leg', and 'mouth' (口), and as a mnemonic:  'Use mouth and legs to trade, standing at counter.'
