拾い出す == hiroidasu == to single out, to select
拾い物 == hiroimono == bargain


Left radical is radical version of 'hand', right is 'join' (合), thus, 'using both hands'. It came to mean 'ten' because there are ten fingers on both hands. It is still used to mean 'ten' rather than 十 in very formal documents. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic:  'Joined hands can gather or count to ten.'
