BTW, thanks to everyone who wished me well during my root canal. It actually wasn't bad; my main worry was that my pain would get out of control before my appointment came due. It didn't. Most of it went fine. It was my fourth root canal (third in the last month, groan), and the only one that has been at all painful. At the very end, the endodontist couldn't fill the tooth because of excessive pain. He says there is inflammation around the root, so the tooth now has a temporary filling until the inflammation goes down and a permanent filling is installed in two weeks.

SAI
matsu(ru), matsuri
meaning: festival, worship
祭日 == saijitsu == holiday
雪祭 == yukimatsuri == snow festival

Originally a pictograph of a hand (upper right elements) placing a piece of 'meat' (肉) on an 'altar' (示), i.e., representing a sacrifice during a religious ceremony. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic:  'Hand puts meat on altar in festival of worship.'
