苦味 == nigami == bitterness, bitter taste


Top radical is 'plant', bottom is 'old' (古), used phonetically to express 'bitter', and possibly the idea of 'lingering'. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic:  'Old plant leaves bitter taste.'
