Top radical is 'plant', bottom radical is 'what' (何), the latter being used in its original sense of 'bear a heavy load'. The original meaning of this character was 'lotus', and still means this in Chinese. How it came to be used in its present meaning is somewhat unclear. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic: 'What a burden the lotus plant can be!'
