meaning: village, league
古里 == furusato == home town, birthplace, old village, historic village, native place, one's old home
万里 == banri == thousands of miles

Upper radical is 'field' (田), bottom is 'earth/ground' (土). The latter character apparently indicated earthen paths, thus a village: 'ground with fields and dividing paths'. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic:  'Ground tilled into fields, indicating village.'
