Apropos of nothing:
I went searching for the proper term for a baby rat. I thought it might be either 'pup' or 'kitten'.
I discovered it's both. When researchers use them and report on them, they're pups. When rat fanciers talk about them, they're kittens. And the adults are does and bucks. (So why aren't baby rats called 'fawns'? And they definitely aren't.) Anyone know any other terminology? kimikohime, maybe?
|Formerly the radicals for 'black' (黒) and 'divination' (占), the latter acting phonetically to express 'small'. Thus, 'small black sign'. Henshall suggests taking 占 in its meaning as 'occupy', and the bottom radical as 'fire' and as a mnemonic: 'Mark left after occupation by fire.'|
