KOU
hika(ru), hikari
meaning: light, shine
日光 == nikkou == sunlight
光年 == kounen == lightyear

Top portion was originally a pictograph of flames, a variant of 'fire' (火), with the bottom portion a version of 'person' (人). This may have been used phonetically to express 'big', but also may have indicated a person carrying a torch over his head. Henshall suggests  as a mnemonic:  'Person carries fire that shines light.'
