meaning: jewel, ball
目玉 == medama == eyeball
悪玉 == akutama (or akudama) == bad guy, villain


From a pictograph of a string of beads, possibly originally jade disks. The extra stroke distinguishes it from the character for 'king' (王), but is dropped when this character is used as a radical. Henshall suggests  as a mnemonic:  'String of jewels fit for a king.'
