I just made a Free Range Fruitcake. It's in the oven now.
I accidentally left out the salt. I suck.
It won't be completely bland, there's lots of sodium in both baking powder and baking soda, which the fruitcake has in it, but I have no idea how it is going to turn out. And I won't be able to find out until Christmas, since it has to marinate in brandy for two weeks.
I'll let you know.
I just can't read the name of this thing without picturing fruitcakes frolicking over the prairie.

You know the Rapture? When the saved are going to fly up to heaven, right off the sidewalk, out of their offices and cars, floating up through the air, leaving the rest of us behind?
It occurred to me the other night what the Rapture will really be like. Very few humans will float upward. It will mainly be dogs.
Dogs embody everything we admire in human beings. Faithfulness, unconditional love, constant cheerfulness, always willing to help us out, play with us, or commiserate with us, whatever we need. Dogs embody far more of that character we profess to admire than actual humans do.
On the day of the Rapture, then, it will be mainly dogs flying up through the air, yipping and yapping, trailing their leashes behind them, flapping their legs and wagging their tails delightedly. Poodles1 with rhinestone-studded collars, seeing-eye dogs trailing their harnesses, hunting dogs with pheasants still in their mouths, Army K-9 Corps dogs wearing their identifying coats, loving but unloved mutts from the pound, who were about to be gassed, but now have eternal life, all floating upward into the heavens, to lie at the feet of the Eternal Dog Himself, and worship Him and chase Frisbees for Him forever.
Humans, for the most part, will be left behind on Earth, in the company of cats, notorious for their atheism.
1Well, maybe not many poodles. It's common for poodles secretly to worship Satan, I have on good authority.
