meaning: town, block
町田 == Machida == family name, placename
下町 == shitamachi == downtown
Left radical is 'field' (田), right radical is 'nail' (丁), phonetically
expressing 'walk'. This character originally meant 'paths through the fields',
then 'place where fields join', which became 'area/community'. Henshall suggests
taking the right radical as a 'T-junction', for the mnemonic:
'Town at T-junction of paths through fields.'
Interesting that in both Japanese and English, the center of a town is indicated by a compound meaning 'under', or 'lower'.
