RYOU

meaning: both, pair, coin, counter for old
両方 == ryouhou == both sides
両手 == ryoute == both hands
Popularly taken as a set of scales, but was probably originally a pictogram for a gourd split into two equal halves. The 'ryou' was also an old Japanese silver coin. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic:  'Scales weigh both parts of a pair.'
