違式 == ishiki == informality, breach of etiquette
新式 == shinshiki == new style
Left/lower radical is 'carpenter's square' (工), indicting 'measure'. Right/upper radical is 'stake', originally referring to stakes planted in a regular pattern in the ground, giving rise to meaings of 'form' and 'order', then to 'pattern', and from pattern to 'style'. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic:  'Carpenter's square is a form of stake'
