黒金 == kurogane == iron
Originally a pictograph of flames beneath a grill, with marks indicating black soot. Folk etymology is that it is 'flames' (bottom radical) burning the 'ground' (土) in a 'field' (田). This is incorrect, but a useful mnemonic: 'Ground in burnt field is black.'
