|The top radical was originally a variant of 'rice plant'. The bottom radical is 'sword/cut' (刀). The character seems to have evolved from the concept of cutting a notch to indicate a tally. Henshall suggests taking the top radical as two (二) fires (火), and as a mnemonic: 'Start two fires with cut up tickets.'|
