Apparently the meaning of the original radicals (a flower calyx and leaves) have nothing to do with the current meaning, which Henshall says is based on its onomatopoetic, negation-like sound. (Some of the stuff Henshall says often sounds suspiciously like 'folk etymology' to me, but what do I know.) Henshall suggests remembering this kanji as a '1', and three down strokes: 'Put down once, then thrice, for emphatic 'not so''.
